Air Mouse Pro

~ James

One of the apps that sprung me into wanting an iPod, was the Air Mouse Pro. I bought my iPod back in November, so naturally I only just remembered this app and believe me; I’m pleased I did.

Logo

The Air Mouse Pro, developed by RPA Tech, is a simple to use (Though not lacking features) application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. To use it, it requires:

  • The simple download and installation of a program from http://www.mobileairmouse.com and takes only a few minutes to set up. (Must be running Mac OS X 10.4 Intel/PPC or Windows XP, Vista or 7)
  • You must be connected to a wireless network on your iPod Touch or iPhone, and have the computer you are using connected to the same network, wirelessly or otherwise.
  • The application itself, which can be downloaded through the App Store on the iPhone/iPod, or the iTunes application for PC and Mac.
Air Mouse PriceOnce you’ve got all of those, it couldn’t be simpler to use. You simply open the App up, and away you go! You will initially be presented with this loading screen, and then the first screen. (Click images to make them bigger)

IMG_0013IMG_0014

If you notice, in the image to the right, you are initially loaded up with the keyboard, and a Touch Pad, much like the one on most laptops. You also notice the little taskbar in the middle. This allows you to use the keys CTRL, ALT and the WINDOWS button. To the right of this taskbar, you have 4 keys.

The first key with “Aa” on it is the keyboard button. The next, with a “#” gives you a big number pad that covers the entire screen, along with the “Delete” button, and the “/ * – + =” and the “Enter” keys. The “F” button gives you a list of the F1-F12 keys, as well as the arrow, PgDown, PgUp, Esc, Del, Home and Enter keys.

The final button, a downwards pointing triangle/arrow is probably the smartest, and my favourite part of the application. Depending on what program you have open as your active window, this screen will change giving you the most important buttons for the open window. For example, I have currently open Google Chrome (As I am writing this) And the application is giving me the ability to use the Back Page, Next Page, Home, Search, Refresh, Stop and Favourite buttons! Not to mention New Tab, Window, Open, Zoom out and Zoom in! It’s truely a work of art.

If you shake the iPhone/iPod, then the keyboard will disappear, and you will have the whole screen to use as a touch pad. You’re given a nice little scroll wheel to the bottom, and even a nifty little sensor to tell you how good the connection is!

Finally, you should notice to the top of the screen, there is a little button in the top right, and top left corner. The one in the left is your settings, and the one in the right turns this app into a literal “Air Mouse”.

IMG_0020

Touching the top, above the scroll wheel and holding your finger down allows you to just move the iPhone/iPod and move the cursor on the screen. It can be a little jumpy, and will take a bit of practice to get used to it, but it’s pretty good for bigger screens, and should you be doing a presentation, or working on a large screen.

Now, If you flip the iPhone/iPod to it’s side, the touch pad and keyboard also flip. This is good if you’re going to be using the iPhone/iPod as a touch pad, for it gives you more area to move the cursor, and gives you a better landscape keyboard to use. It’s not good enough for a permanent keyboard, but can be useful for putting things in quickly.

IMG_0015IMG_0016

My personal opinion on this app, is that it is brilliant. Whether you just want to get a bigger touch pad, or want a simple and quick app that can help you manage your computer and it’s tasks, then this is for you! And for the stunning price of £1.19, I’d definitely recommend downloading this.

Conor, Out.

Talking Carl

So one night I’m browsing the App Store looking for some interesting to buy with the last 0.69p of my Store Credit, and I came across “Talking Carl”. The icon caught my eye and the text drew me in. So I decided to check it out!

The entry for Talking Carl on the App Store
The entry for Talking Carl on the App Store

So after a quick download and installation, I fired up Carl for the first time. And nothing happened. So I tapped him – and the fun started! When he started shouting back at me, a small “Woah..” escaped from my mouth, which he happily repeated! And since then, he’s repeated all sorts of words, ranging from “I’m a lumberjack and I’m okay!” to repeating the chorus to Riverside by Sidney Samson :)

Meet Carl. He can say anything you can, higher
Meet Carl. He can say anything you can, he can say higher :)

So what are Carl’s features? You can talk to him, and he’ll repeat it. If you poke him, he’ll shout and shake. If you tickle him he’ll start liking, which I quite like! If you pinch him he’ll start growling, almost like the engine of a car, and if you ignore him he’ll start mumbling and fussing, since he has no attention!

This app has been a pleasure to play with. Thinking about it, it is a simple idea. An app that repeats what you say to it. But with all the little features introduced by the developer, plus the higher pitch Carl replays back in, it’s worth the price of 0.59p.

But since it’s difficult to really describe how fun this app is, I’m gonna have to show you it in action! So yes, there is another screen cast! I’d like to apologies for the low quality. It was recorded by an ancient camera :/

And the icing on the cake – when you press the home button to leave Carl, a little “Bye bye” can be heard in the distance. Excellent :D

Last.fm

We listen to music everyday. Apple developed applications like iTunes and devices like the iPod & iPhone to encourage us to listen to more music. Then came the iTunes Store, and Spotify, and more and more music-related products/services. The more you think about it, the more it seems music has integrated itself into our lives, well, that was until the X-Factor came along and humiliated it…

Last.fm is one of the many services that jumps on the musical bandwagon. It’s a free service that “scrobbles” (remembers and lists) the recent songs you’ve listened to, then presents them on your profile page and to top it all of, it compares your music with your friends, giving you compatibility ratings!

When I got introduced to it, I didn’t really see the point. So it remembers my music, and displays them on the site. Big deal. But then when I found friends on Last.fm I realised that I could use this to listen to what my friends like, without buying it and I reckon I could use it to predict what others will like in the future and buy them a newly-released album for their birthday / Christmas etc.

There are may tools that can scrobble your music to Last.fm, the mostly used one being the desktop Scrobbler, which loads automatically with iTunes and scrobbles your music behind the scenes. The desktop version has the ability to read off your iPhone / iPod any songs you’ve listened to, and will automatically scrobble them too!

Here are some pictures of the desktop scrobbler and the online website.
The Mac version of the Last.fm Scrobbler app The homepage for Last.fm A little bit about your friends on the homepage is a nice touch! Last.fm can tell you all about your friends and their listening trends! Last.fm also compares your music with your friends, and gives you ratings. Last.fm is so finely tuned, it can tell friends what you listen to music through, and which Last.fm you're using at the moment!

There is also an application for iPhone, Android, Xbox Live, BlackBerry, Logitech, Sonos, Vodafone, 3 and Revo. They’re all found here.

So that’s Last.fm. It’s like that, and that’s the way it is ;)
I recommend you go and try it, since it’s free, and you’ve got absolutely nothing to lose!
